Don’t miss your chance to ride behind one of Britain’s icons from the golden age of steam. No. 60007 Sir Nigel Gresley will be in action at the North Yorkshire Moors Railway between Pickering and Grosmont this March, courtesy of the Sir Nigel Gresley Locomotive Trust. Whether you’re a devoted enthusiast or looking for a unique day out, this event promises an unforgettable experience.
Why Visit No. 60007 Sir Nigel Gresley?
No. 60007 Sir Nigel Gresley is a renowned member of the LNER A4 Pacific class, designed by the celebrated railway engineer Sir Nigel Gresley. Built in 1937 at the London and North Eastern Railway’s (LNER) Doncaster Works, the locomotive was one of 35 streamlined A4s designed for high-speed express services. Originally entering service on the East Coast Main Line, No. 60007 quickly gained recognition for its sleek, aerodynamic design, which was both visually striking and highly functional, reducing air resistance and enabling exceptional performance.
The locomotive held a special place in British railway history, when it became famous in 1959 for setting the post-war steam speed record of 112 mph during a test run. After its retirement from British Rail in 1966, No. 60007 was saved by the A4 Locomotive Society and later became the flagship of the Sir Nigel Gresley Locomotive Trust. Restored to full working order, it continues to captivate, showcasing the elegance and engineering excellence of Britain’s golden age of steam.
This special visit offers a rare opportunity to see No. 60007 Sir Nigel Gresley in action, steaming along one of the UK’s most scenic heritage lines.

Whether you're a dedicated railway enthusiast or simply looking for a memorable day out, don’t miss this special opportunity to see Bahamas in action.
The Story of Bahamas
Built in 1934 by the North British Locomotive Company in Glasgow, Bahamas was part of the iconic Jubilee Class of locomotives, designed by the renowned William Stanier for the London, Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS). Entering service in January 1935, it became a true workhorse of the railway network. In 1936, the locomotive was named Bahamas, after the beautiful islands in the Caribbean, reflecting its strong ties to the Commonwealth. Following nationalisation in 1948, Bahamas was renumbered to 45596 and spent time operating from various locations, including Edge Hill, Liverpool.
In the 1960s, Bahamas underwent significant modifications to improve its performance, including an overhaul that allowed it to run more efficiently on lower-quality coal. Although it had a relatively short period of active service after these changes, Bahamas captured the hearts of many, and in 1967, a group of passionate enthusiasts (Bahamas Locomotive Society) managed to save it from being scrapped. Thanks to their efforts, Bahamas was preserved and has since become a beloved symbol of the golden age of steam. Now, we are proud to bring this remarkable locomotive to the NYMR, where visitors will have the chance to experience its timeless power and elegance.
Join us as we celebrate this masterpiece of railway history and the ongoing legacy of steam travel; Step aboard a heritage train and enjoy the scenic journey from Pickering to Grosmont through the breath-taking North York Moors, powered by No. 45596 Bahamas.
